Facebook [Apr. 7th, 2008|01:57 pm]
So I finally broke down and joined Facebook after being pestered about it non-stop.  (Trust me, there is angry glaring going on behind the monitor directed at Sara and Amy.)  Feel free to add me -- I'm listed under "Nicholas Yu" -- but I don't expect to use it that often.

Still Not a Real Holiday [Feb. 15th, 2008|05:19 am]
[music |The Mother Hips - Time We Had]

Valentine's Day is commerical propaganda at its worst.  Happy Chinese New Year instead (a few days late -- I had meant to post something on Feb. 7)!

In boring news, I've slipped from my Halo 3 habit into a Rock Band one.  I basically consider Rock Band to be a party-in-a-box and I've carted it with me (and an extra guitar from Guitar Hero III) to several parties.  I beat Devil May Cry 4 in what was basically two sittings and picked up a copy of Lost Odyssey, though I haven't fired it up yet.  My professional career is smooth sailing, but my personal life continues to perplex me, so I take solace in video games.  What else is new?

P.S. I really want to buy a house but I'd be a fool not to wait for the housing market to completely bottom out in a year.

Disturbing Trend [Jan. 3rd, 2008|01:24 am]

So, I've noticed that I've grown a little wilder in the past few months and have behaved very uncharacteristically.  "Party animal" may be too much of a stretch, but I've definitely gone out and deliberately gotten smashed a few times since the holiday season started.  I've also gotten in a couple of fights (I'm 2-0 with nary a scratch, but I was actually pretty lucky the second fight was broken up as the guy was 6'5" and over 250 lbs.) and have been flirting with girls almost ten years my junior.  Okay, so maybe dating younger girls is part of my repertoire, but this is extreme even for me.  There's actually a maturity gap wherein I'm the more responsible party.  Crazy, right?

I feel like I'm rebelling against my upcoming thirtieth birthday and acting like I'm still twenty, or, at least, how I think twenty-year olds behave because I was never this crazy when I was actually twenty.  I'm probably also rebelling against the very "vanilla" flavor of my current life.  I've always been more of a "raspberry sorbet" type of guy and need that extra level of "oomph" or what-have-you.  What I really need to do is stop delaying the purchase of a permanent residence (I've had enough saved up for awhile) and find a nice girl with whom to settle down.

Any volunteers?

Happy New Year! [Jan. 2nd, 2008|01:17 pm]
[music |Jonathan Coulton - Still Alive]

This is a little late, but I spent most of yesterday with a giant headache.  Raaaawr.  I hope everyone made it through the holiday season intact!

Gobble [Nov. 22nd, 2007|05:22 pm]

Do I Fucking Look Under Eighteen to You?! [Nov. 16th, 2007|05:46 pm]
So I flipped out on the guy at EB today when I pre-ordered Mass Effect and he carded me.  I felt bad afterwards, but I still haven't gotten to that point (and everyone insists that it's coming!) where it's cool to look ten years younger than you actually are.

Quick Update [Nov. 1st, 2007|02:06 pm]
So I go to work, see the same people, hit a bar, see the same people, play Halo 3, shoot the same people.  I'm actually in good shape right now (physically, emotionally, and financially) but there's an itch that's starting up that I want to scratch.  I'm not sure from which metaphysical area this itch is originating, but I think I'm going to let it be for now.

Also, I'm not quite as amazing at Halo 3 as I used to be for Unreal Tournament but I'm starting to get dangerous.  It's rare when I pick up the Needler or the rocket launcher and don't score a Double or a Triple Kill.  I'd like to play with more people here on my friends list, but I've only been able to log on late at night for the last couple of weeks.

House-Hunting? [Oct. 8th, 2007|08:57 pm]

So I'm thinking about buying a condominium or a house, but I realized I don't have nearly enough stuff to fill a condo, let alone a house.  I just got a new car so I don't need one of those, and I'm just too fiscally irresponsible to just keep on saving!  Maybe I'll take a nice vacation somewhere!

Halo 3 [Sep. 30th, 2007|08:40 pm]
So I've been skirting by on 5 hours of sleep each night since I've been staying up to play Halo 3 over X-Box Live with some of the guys at work.  We've just been doing Team Slayer and getting a feel for each other before we start branching out.

It's frustrating to find out that I'm just in the middle of the pack right now.  I'm more than a little rusty when it comes to FPS games, but I have more than my fair share of God-given talent when it comes to adaptation and hand-eye coordination.  Basically, I can wipe the floor with someone "casual" but I get owned pretty consistently by any of the many dedicated Halo enthusiasts.   The last time I was seriously competing in an FPS dates all the way back to Unreal Tournament.  I don't expect it to take too long to regain some of my skills (or, perhaps in this context, "skillilz") but it's going to be a long couple of weeks wherein I get my ass sniped off or run over by all manner of vehicles.

Master Chief: Thought I'd shoot my way out.  Mix things up a little.

X-Box Live gamertag: hotzp

I plan to be online frequently in the next couple of weeks.  Feel free to friend me so that I can shoot you in the face (I can also be convinced to play co-op).  Cheers!

My Inner Voice is a Jerk [Sep. 15th, 2007|08:42 pm]
Sometimes there's a tiny little voice that whispers to me, "Look at you with your khaki pants and matching socks and free Accidental Death and Dismemberment insurance coverage!  You used to be different, you used to be somebody.  Now you're just another cog in The Machine.  I mean, sure, you seem to be doing okay on the surface, but at what price, Dr. Faustus?"

Sometimes that voice keeps me up all night.

Another Notch in the Gamer Bedpost [Sep. 7th, 2007|06:30 pm]
I just beat Blue Dragon last night but I kind of made the ending anticlimactic by leveling the crap out of my party so that the last few bosses were total pushovers.  Blue Dragon suffers from the same problem as many Final Fantasy games: the game opens up a ton of challenging sidequests right before the final sequence of plot events, and if you actually go and accomplish everything, you're completely overpowered for the actual ending to the game.  Like its spiritual predecessor Final Fantasy VI, Blue Dragon has a set of legendary dragons that are far more powerful than any of the major plot villains.  This is pretty much my only gripe about the game, though, and I still give it a strong recommendation.  Now I'm just waiting for Eternal Sonata!

Le Big Dragon [Aug. 30th, 2007|05:52 pm]
I can't remember when I last stayed up until six or seven in the morning playing a console RPG, but it happened for the first time in a very long time today with Blue Dragon.  Of course, I'm paying for it at work today but it was worth it.  I'm not one-hundred percent sold on the Toriyama character designs, but the gameplay is solidly addictive and the entire approach to the game is unabashedly old-school: Blue Dragon isn't an action-RPG hybrid, or a CCG-RPG hybrid, or an action-RTS-CCG-RPG-dating-sim-foot-massager.  It's just an RPG.  And I happen to like that.

Console Gaming! [Aug. 23rd, 2007|10:42 pm]

So, I finally broke down and bought an X-Box 360.  I'm glad I waited until they ironed out the kinks of the first generation models, because they definitely had a plethora of problems.  I grabbed it in anticipation of the soon-to-come releases of Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata, and I'll also eventually want it for Halo 3 and Fallout 3.  I picked up Marvel: Ultimate Alliance and Giant-Jiggling-Boobs-on-Unbelievably-Proportioned Females or Alive 4.  I really liked the X-Men: Legends series, so it's no surprise that I'm enjoying Ultimate Alliance; and while DoA4 is actually a surprisingly good fighting game, I can't help but feel kind of dirty while playing it.

Hey, Kasumi: It's called "modest attire".  Look into it.

Ultimate Nerd Fighting Championship 2007 [Aug. 19th, 2007|10:39 pm]

So, we threw down at work the other day.  It was a hard core and OG (Original Geek) tussle.  There are terminals near the human resources area that are set up with typing programs to measure Words Per Minute.  I don't even remember who originally threw down the gauntlet, but all the geeky guys on my team agreed to the challenge.  We comandeered one of the terminals and went in pairs: One person would act as an observer and would record the results of the other, and then they would exchange positions.

The typing program (or, at least, the challenge with which I was presented) was a split-screen affair.  It had one of Aesop's Fables at the top and room to re-type it as quickly as possible on the bottom.  The tricky part to this test was that you could only backspace within your current word.  If you made a typo and hit space, you were screwed and stuck with it (thus hurting your final score).  I think that part of the testing made everyone type a lot more slowly and carefully than they normally would.  I normally zing through my typing without a care in the world, and I often won't spot an error until much much later.  I made a couple of mistakes early on and had to slow my pace to ensure that I wouldn't make any more.  Still, I wound up 67 WPM with a 98% accuracy rate and trounced the competition.

Hail to the King, baby.

Lucky at Cards ... [Jul. 26th, 2007|05:43 pm]
[music |Steve Jablonski - The Autobots Descend]

So I feel as if one of my friends is grooming me to be her next boyfriend.  She's currently dating someone else, but that relationship has been falling apart for the last few months.  In that time, she's turned to me for support, and I've gladly been there for her; however, I am also friends with her boyfriend and it makes me feel somewhat disloyal to be talking to her so much even though our conversations have never been remotely inappropriate.  She's never explicitly stated or even strongly hinted that she'd like to date me after she's single again, but I personally think the implication is there.  And if it's an unspoken understanding powerful enough to penetrate even my thick skull, then I don't think I'm just imagining it.

Pros: She's cute, smart, sexy, funny, gorgeous, charming, pretty, kind to animals, hot, sophisticated, and beautiful.  Did I mention how attractive she is?  I don't think I'm communicating that clearly enough.  She's one of those girls that you don't even bother flirting with because she's probably already dating a movie star or Jesus or something.

Cons: I have never been "the other guy" and I refuse to ever get involved in that kind of situation.  While nothing improper has happened yet, it feels like it might sooner or later.

I should probably just tell her this straight out, but I'm afraid of alienating her.

...

When the fuck did I get so wishy-washy?
